What is my accent? English accent quiz
Twelve words separate the main accents of English. Tell the quiz how you say each one and it shows which accent your pronunciation leans toward: American, British, Australian or Canadian. It reads your answers, not your voice, so say each word aloud before you choose.
Accent quiz
Say the word out loud, then pick the description that fits how it came out.
How the quiz decides
Linguists tell accents apart by a short list of features: whether R is pronounced after a vowel, which vowel is used in the “bath” words, what happens to T between vowels, and a few marker words. Each answer adds a point to every accent that has that feature. The accent with the most points is your result.
| Feature | American | British (South) | Australian | Canadian |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R in “car” | pronounced | silent | silent | pronounced |
| Vowel in “bath” | as in “cat” | as in “father” | as in “father” | as in “cat” |
| T in “water” | soft D | clear T | soft D | soft D |
| “Schedule” | SK- | SH- | SH- | SK- |
| Last letter | zee | zed | zed | zed |
Can a website detect my accent from my voice?
Some services ask you to read a sentence and then name your native language. They use models trained on thousands of accented recordings. This quiz does not do that. It is a checklist of features, which is why it can explain every point of the result.
If you want a voice-based result, our accent test listens to you and scores how much of your speech is understood, with the sounds to fix.
For learners: mixed results are normal
Most learners mix American and British features, because teachers, films and apps use different models. A mixed accent is understood everywhere. Consistency matters more than the choice: pick one model for R and for the “bath” vowel and keep to it.

Why did I get Canadian?
Canadian English shares most features with American English. A few answers, such as “zed” or the tight vowel in “about”, are enough to tip the result.
