Accent test

How to improve your English accent

An accent improves fastest when you fix things in order of damage: first the sounds that turn one word into another, then word stress, then rhythm and linking. Sounding native is optional. Being understood on the first try is the goal, and for most learners it is a few months of focused work.

What to fix first

PriorityFeatureWhy
1Vowel contrasts: ship / sheep, bad / bedThey change the word.
1Final consonants: bed / bet, asked, monthsDropped or changed endings remove grammar and meaning.
2Word stressWrong stress makes a word unrecognizable.
2TH, V / W, R / L (whichever your language lacks)They create wrong words.
3Weak forms and rhythmThey make long sentences easy to follow.
4Flap T, dark L, exact vowel qualityThey affect how native you sound, not whether you are understood.

A 4-week plan, 15 minutes a day

WeekFocusDaily practice
1Diagnosis and vowelsTake the accent test. Practise two minimal pairs a day, listening first.
2Your two worst consonantsOne sound guide a day, then its word list with the voice check.
3Word stress and schwaTen words from your own job or studies: mark the stress, weaken the rest.
4Rhythm and linkingShadow five sentences a day. Retake the accent test on the last day.

How to speak more clearly today

  • Slow down by about a fifth. Speed is the first thing that removes final consonants.
  • Finish your words. Pronounce the last sound of every word, especially T, D, S and Z.
  • Stress the important word in each sentence and let the others go.
  • Pause between ideas, not between words.

American accent training: what is specific

If your model is General American, add four features: pronounce every R, use the flap T in “water” and “city”, use the /æ/ vowel in “bath” and “dance”, and merge “cot” and “caught” if you find the two vowels hard to separate.

Questions people ask

Can adults change their accent?

Yes. Adults rarely reach a native sound, but controlled studies show clear gains in intelligibility from a few weeks of targeted training.

How long does it take?

Expect a noticeable change in one to three months of daily short practice. One sound usually takes one to two weeks to become automatic.

Should I try to lose my accent completely?

It is not necessary and rarely possible. Aim to be understood without effort; keep the rest.

Is free accent training enough?

For the first stages, yes: the tools and guides here cover diagnosis and the main sounds. A teacher helps most with rhythm and intonation.
