Do I have a Russian accent in English?
A Russian accent in English comes from about eight habits, and each sentence below targets one of them. Read them aloud: the sentences where your words come back changed show which habits you still have.

The eight markers of a Russian accent
| Marker | Why Russian speakers do it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| TH → S / Z | Russian has no dental fricatives. | “I sink so” for “I think so” |
| W → V | Russian has В but no W. | “vine” for “wine” |
| Hard H | Х is the nearest Russian sound. | “khello” |
| Final devoicing | Russian devoices every final voiced consonant. | “bet” for “bed” |
| No vowel length | Russian vowels do not contrast in length. | “ship” = “sheep” |
| Missing /æ/ | Russian has no /æ/, so Э is used. | “men” for “man” |
| NG + G | Russian has no /ŋ/. | “sin-ging” |
| Rolled R | Russian Р is a trill. | a tapped R in “very” |
Two more habits do not show up in single sounds: palatalizing consonants before I and E (a soft “t” in “tea”), and flat, falling intonation that can sound abrupt to English listeners.
Which ones actually matter
Final devoicing, vowel length and the TH and W sounds change one word into another, so they cause real misunderstandings: “bad” and “bat”, “leave” and “live”, “worse” and “verse”. Fix those first. A rolled R and a hard H mark you as Russian but almost never change the meaning.
How to reduce it
- Take the test and note the sentences that failed.
- Practise one marker a week. Mixing all eight at once does not work.
- Hold final voiced consonants longer than feels natural: “dogg”, “bagg”. The vowel before a voiced consonant is longer too.
- Record yourself reading the same paragraph every week and compare.
Questions people ask
Is a Russian accent hard to understand?
Usually not. It is one of the more intelligible accents because Russian consonants are close to English ones. The problems are concentrated in vowel length and final consonants.
Can I lose a Russian accent completely as an adult?
Few adults reach a fully native sound, but most can remove the markers that cause misunderstanding within a few months of focused practice.
What does a Russian accent sound like to native speakers?
They mostly notice the V for W, the rolled R, the hard H and a flat melody. These make the accent recognizable, not unclear.
