English pronunciation checker
Paste a sentence, read it aloud, and the checker marks every word a speech recognizer could not match to what you said. It is free, runs in your browser and needs no account.
Check your pronunciation
Replace the sample with your own text (up to 120 words), press Start reading and read it at a normal speed.
Runs in your browser with its built-in speech recognition (Chrome, Edge, Safari). Nothing is installed and no account is needed.
How the checker works
Your browser turns your speech into text with a recognizer trained mostly on native speakers. The page then lines that text up against the text you were reading. A word shown in green was understood as written. A word underlined in red came out as a different word, or was not heard at all.
That is the same test a listener applies: did the word arrive? If “think” is heard as “sink”, the recognizer does what a real person does and hears the wrong word.
What the score means
- 90–100: clear speech, almost every word arrived as intended.
- 75–89: easy to follow, with a few words to repair.
- 55–74: understandable with effort; several sounds are changing your words.
- Below 55: slow down and work through the red words one at a time.
The score is the share of words understood. It does not grade single sounds, rhythm or intonation, and one noisy room can cost you ten points. Read the same text twice before you trust a number.
How to fix a word that keeps turning red
- Press Hear it first and listen to the whole sentence.
- Look at what the recognizer wrote instead. The wrong word tells you which sound slipped: “sink” for “think” is the TH sound, “wet” for “vet” is V and W.
- Say the single word slowly three times, then the full sentence again.
- If the same sound fails in several words, open the guide for that sound below.
Questions people ask
Is this pronunciation checker really free?
Yes. Recognition runs inside your browser, so there is nothing for us to charge for and no limit on attempts.
Does it store my voice?
The page does not record or upload audio. Speech recognition is handled by your browser; in Chrome and Safari the browser vendor processes the audio to produce the text.
Why was a word marked wrong when I said it correctly?
Recognizers make mistakes, especially with names, very short words and background noise. Treat one red word as a hint. A word that turns red on three tries in a row is a real pronunciation issue.
Which browsers work?
Chrome, Edge and Safari on phones and computers. Firefox does not include speech recognition, so only the listening buttons work there.
